David Crystal, the author of “Txtng: The Gr8 Db8,” told me in an e-mail message that “there’s nothing in texting to suggest spelling reform,” noting that texting relies heavily on abbreviations, which he sees as creative stylings, not systematic improvements.
It seems that this "texting" issue has become a hot topic among scholars. I do believe that this world has changed beyond recognition, and everything is getting more comfortable and user-friendly comparing to that of 20th century. Thanks to the arising of some smart input methods,we no longer type English or other languages letter by letter, for they will help us to find out which word or phrase we need according to the first or the second letter we have typed.
Unfortunately, even we are lucky enough to type words in such an easy way, there are still some kids focus so much on simplifying that they have started to neglect the fundamental structure of a language. Firstly, they use simplified phrase in their text messages, and then they will get used to it and try to use it everywhere possible, which will definitely do harm to their knowledge of their mother tongue. A language is a language. We can simplify and use it as long as we can distinguish the difference between formal and informal usage, otherwise our language will be destroyed. Because everything is worthless if it is too simple.

You make a good point about the possibility of our language becoming too simplified. I think of languages where one word can have numerous meanings, whereas in the English language, there are a plethora of words to choose from that will convey an accurate meaning. I am concerned that we are moving into an era of laziness, where everthing is about speed and taking shortcuts to the point where our brain circuits become shortened due to lack of use.
ReplyDeleteI agree that people should learn the rules of their language. Just because you like to use abbreviations doesn't mean you shouldn't learn how to spell a word correctly. I agree that this could lead to harmful effects for a person's intellectual attitude. Good reaction!
ReplyDeleteYour reaction to the article appears to reflect the opinion of the younger generation. It comes so easy to them but we can not forget where we came from.
