OMG, What Has Happened to English?
Quote:
It's natural for languages to evolve. But what should really concern us is the way computers and mobile phones are changing our attitudes toward language.
Reaction:
It is not uncommon to hear and see languages like LOL (laughing out loud), OMG (oh my god), BTW(by the way) in our daily conversation now. As far as I am concerned, just like every coin has two sides, if we could use abbreviation properly, it would help us to express ourselves not only shortly but also correctly. Otherwise, our mother language would be eroded by inertia, especially our attitudes toward it which is highly recommended in our educational period so seriously.
It is time to stop saying "whatever" to our mistakes in improper language usage. Simplifying something is worth admiring, for we need it in this updating society, however not in our language. In my point of view, language and literature is beautiful just because of its complicated structure. For example, your English 1104 instructor will never and ever give you an A because you have used abbreviation in your essay as many as you can, contrarily, she wants you to know and utilize something that is called art in writing not deformalization.
In conclusion, as long as we could look up two words "formal" and "informal" in the dictionary, we have the responsability to distinguish them and use them appropriately as required.

I agree that the art of language and literature is beautiful in its complicated nature. We have a responsibility in preserving it as individuals and teaching it to future generations.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your reaction to the quote. I completely agree that there is a good side as well as a bad side to abbreviations! It's important that students are able to distinguish the proper time to use informal and formal language.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we need to teach our students to distinguish between informal and formal language.
ReplyDeleteNice job!
